3 Reasons Why You Should Invest in Travel Insurance for Your Next Vacation

September 8, 2026

Whenever I design a new trip for a client, I always highly recommend they invest in travel insurance. It’s not a “fun” part of trip planning to think about, but it’s so important to safeguard your vacation investment—and your health and well-being while you’re abroad.

In fact, I offer a complimentary travel insurance quote through a trusted insurance partner as a part of my planning process. Why am I so gung-ho about travel insurance? Here are the top 3 reasons why you need travel insurance to cover your next journey—because you deserve peace of mind as a part of your travel experience.

1. Your health insurance most likely doesn’t cover you abroad.

Think you’re already covered for doctor’s visits or hospital stays abroad because you have health insurance? It typically doesn’t translate overseas—and so travel insurance fills the gap. And with healthcare costs being so expensive, that’s a BIG gap to fill. No one wants to think about getting sick or injured while on vacation, but sometimes, it happens. You roll an ankle while walking down one of Rome’s cobblestone streets, and suddenly, you’re faced with a tough choice of undergoing surgery in an unfamiliar country, or having to pay out of pocket to be medivac’d back home.

It would be bad enough to mourn a vacation that throws you a medical curve ball, upending your journey. It would be so much worse to have to worry about how to pay for it all, while in the fog of pain and uncertainty. The right travel insurance takes that huge worry off your shoulders, so you can focus on getting home and feeling better ASAP.

2. Travel is unpredictable—but travel insurance helps you “plan” and pay for the unexpected.

It would be amazing if all your transportation went off without a hitch—but as anyone who has been to a bustling airport in the past year or so can tell, that just doesn’t happen all the time. Especially on large trips that require multiple layovers, the chances of a delayed or canceled flight goes up. Travel insurance can help you here as well, reimbursing you for expenses (like unexpected hotel stays, or a long car transfer to the next port to catch the cruise you missed) related to travel delays and lost luggage.

3. Travel insurance could cover the unexpected before you even leave for your trip.

Sometimes, you get thrown a curveball before you even start packing for your journey—and you need to cancel your trip entirely. Certain types of travel insurance coverage offers reimbursement if you can’t make the journey for qualifying reasons, such as a close family member or yourself getting sick, or a death in the family. You’ll want to check carefully to make sure the travel insurance you’re choosing offers this benefit (I can help guide you on this), since it doesn’t always come standard.
